Where did the time go?! Even with the monthly reporting and all of the work I’ve been putting in, I feel like the first quarter slipped past me like a dog zipping across the kitchen for a bit of steak dropped on the floor. But, inevitably, it’s time to set my goals for the second quarter! I thought I’d share my process and invite you to join me.
First, I’ll evaluate where I am. Finding my current location is essential to the process. After all, just like a road trip, if you don’t know where you are on the map to begin with, you’ll have a hard time getting to your destination. Time to take stock of where I am and what’s happened over the past three months.
With that information in hand, I’ll check back to where I began. Flipping back in my journal, my WOW goal for the year and milestones I hoped to achieve will be waiting for me. Did everything go as planned? No? Well, that’s perfect because it didn’t go as planned for anyone else either! We all begin with wonderful ideas and fabulous plans and then reality steps all over them.
However, I’ll look at the difference between where I was and where I am. Reflecting on my journey, I’ll celebrate the progress made!
Now I consider several questions:
Did I achieve my goals?
What were my wins?
What challenges did I face, and how did I overcome them?
Were there any milestone goals I didn’t achieve? Can I define why I didn’t achieve them? Are they still relevant?
Any milestone goals that weren’t achieved but are still necessary for me to hit my WOW goal by the end of the year will be moved to the second quarter. If they aren’t necessary, I’ll drop them. “Don’t let the door hit you in the ass, you obsolete goal!”
Next, it’s time to take a few moments and just think about what new milestones could be set. Meditation, drawing a mind-map, journaling, or drawing a business garden landscape all seem useful in this process. One of my business gurus has you actually draw a physical map of where you are and where you want to be with all of the milestones in between.
Basically, I want to identify three to four milestone goals total for each quarter.
Finally, I’ll take some time to mind-map each of those goals and come up with twelve steps to take to achieve each one. Those twelve things give me one activity to do each week in order to achieve each milestone goal.
The goal here is to define milestones and steps so I can TAKE ACTION!
This may seem like a lot of work just to set up goals for each quarter, but this process keeps me fresh and focused.
